Trump expresses support for potential Kurdish military action in Iran.

As geopolitical tensions escalate in the Middle East, the U.S. has intensified its rhetoric surrounding Kurdish aspirations in Iran. President Donald Trump’s recent endorsement of a potential Kurdish ground assault highlights both the complex interplay of regional dynamics and America’s ongoing engagement with ethnic groups in pursuit of broader strategic objectives. This development raises questions about the potential ramifications for regional stability, particularly in the context of the Kurdish population’s longstanding quest for autonomy.

Washington’s interest in Kurdish activities has intensified recently, with President Donald Trump expressing strong support for a potential Kurdish offensive against Iran. During an interview with ZezapTV, Trump stated, “I think it’s wonderful that they want to do that, I’d be all for it,” when discussing the idea of a Kurdish rebellion within Iran. This expression of backing comes amid reports that the U.S. is encouraging Iranian Kurdish groups in their efforts to challenge the Iranian government.

Various U.S. media outlets report that Trump has contacted leaders from the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of Iraq to enable an armed action from Iranian Kurdish groups targeting Iran. However, when asked about the possibility of U.S. air support for these Kurdish rebels, Trump did not provide a clear answer. While the White House has acknowledged Trump’s communication with Kurdish leaders, officials emphasized that he did not explicitly endorse a plan for an armed uprising.

Karoline Leavitt, a White House spokesperson, reiterated that the president maintains ongoing discussions with partners in the Middle East and confirmed the existence of U.S. military assets in Erbil, Iraq, which have faced multiple Iranian drone and missile attacks due to the ongoing conflict in the region.

Iran is home to millions of Kurds, who constitute a significant ethnic minority not only in Iran but also in neighboring Iraq, Syria, and Turkiye. Amid the rising tensions, Mustafa Hijri, the leader of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI), called for military personnel across Iran, particularly from Kurdistan, to desert their posts. He urged soldiers to abandon their military duties and return to their families, framing the call as a means of preserving their lives against escalating attacks.

Historically, the U.S. has urged Kurdish groups seeking greater autonomy to rise against governments it deems hostile. However, critics have highlighted the potential dangers of exacerbating ethnic tensions in Iran, warning it might lead to civil unrest that could have destabilizing effects throughout the region.

Iran’s Press TV has reported recent missile and drone assaults executed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) against what they describe as “anti-Iran terrorist groups” located in Iraqi Kurdistan. In response, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) condemned these Iranian actions and clarified that they are not participating in any offensive against Iran. The KRG reiterated its commitment to peace and regional stability, distancing itself from any escalatory military engagements.

Despite the ongoing pressures and the Trump administration’s calls for an Iranian uprising, there are no clear indications of significant public dissent against the Iranian government following the initiation of hostilities. With ongoing conflict in the region and little evidence of military defections among Iranian troops, the struggle for a reliable ally within Iran remains a key challenge for U.S. policymakers.
