UN experts call on countries to halt arms transfers to Israel.

In recent days, tensions in the Middle East have escalated following Israel’s ongoing military actions in Lebanon, prompting strong condemnation from United Nations experts. Critics argue that these actions not only violate international law but also threaten the fragile prospects for peace in the region. As the international community closely monitors developments, the calls for accountability and restraint grow louder, underscoring the need for a comprehensive approach to resolving the underlying conflicts.
A group of United Nations experts has strongly condemned Israel’s military assault on Lebanon, labeling the actions as illegal. This condemnation comes just a day after the United States and Iran reached an agreement on a ceasefire involving ongoing conflicts in the region. The 19 experts—comprised of special rapporteurs and independent authorities on various human rights concerns—issued their statement on Wednesday, coinciding with Israel’s intensified bombardment of southern Lebanon, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 16 individuals, including four paramedics, according to Lebanese state media.
The UN experts highlighted a particularly devastating wave of Israeli attacks on April 8, which Lebanese officials claimed led to over 350 fatalities, including 30 children. They characterized these actions as “not self-defense,” emphasizing the assertion that this represents a blatant violation of the UN Charter, threatening the foundational principles of multilateralism and the international order governed by the United Nations. The experts called on Israel to immediately cease its military operations in Lebanon and urged member states to stop all arms transfers to Israel, citing credible evidence of significant breaches of international humanitarian and human rights laws.
Israel’s military actions escalated on March 2 following a response from the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah after the U.S. and Israel had executed a drone strike that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. This marked a significant increase in tensions between Israel and Lebanon. Since the conflict’s escalation, Israel’s operations have caused extensive casualties, with reports indicating over 2,000 deaths and the forced displacement of more than 1.2 million individuals in Lebanon.
The UN experts further expressed that such forced displacement represents crimes against humanity, strongly denouncing Israel’s targeting of homes in predominantly Shia areas as a form of collective punishment and indicative of ethnic cleansing. As Israel’s aggressive actions continue, the situation has become entwined with US-Iran negotiations; Iran insists that any ceasefire must include protections for Lebanon, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that Lebanon falls outside the ceasefire, assuring continued military responses to Hezbollah threats.
Amidst these developments, Netanyahu mentioned a desire for long-term peace with Lebanon, contingent upon the disarmament of Hezbollah. Reports from the Reuters news agency suggest that Israel’s security cabinet is set to convene to discuss potential ceasefire options, with senior Lebanese officials also indicating that negotiations for a ceasefire are underway.
