Xbox secures exclusive streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto 6

In an exciting development for the gaming world, Microsoft is preparing to offer streaming rights for the highly anticipated title, Grand Theft Auto VI, through its Xbox Cloud Gaming service. This initiative is scheduled to launch in November, coinciding with the game’s release. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma revealed the news during a recent all-hands meeting with employees, highlighting that the corporation is set to accomplish something unprecedented in the realm of gaming platforms.

Sources suggest that Microsoft’s agreement will allow Xbox Cloud Gaming to stream Grand Theft Auto VI on its launch day, although details regarding the duration of this agreement remain unclear. The absence of a confirmed PC version from Rockstar Games raises questions. Consequently, this streaming deal could serve as a promotional vehicle for Xbox Cloud Gaming, potentially attracting PC gamers who might otherwise require an Xbox Series X/S or PlayStation 5 to access the game.

Initial reports suggested that the deal might be exclusive. However, Xbox’s chief strategy officer, Matthew Ball, later clarified that the streaming rights would not be confined solely to Xbox, nor will they extend to PC platforms. This indicates that the rights are limited to console streaming, possibly excluding standard web browsers and applications typically utilized to access Xbox Cloud Gaming.

The announcement arrives on the heels of significant changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming, which Microsoft previously revealed. Starting in November, Microsoft plans to implement strict hourly limits on streaming for its subscribers, with 15 hours designated for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, ten hours for Premium subscribers, and just five hours for those with Game Pass Essential.

A noteworthy shift in Microsoft’s strategy includes a new pay-as-you-go option for Xbox Cloud Gaming, allowing users without Xbox consoles or those who predominantly play on mobile devices to enjoy titles like Grand Theft Auto VI simply by purchasing a package of streaming hours. This development offers an inclusive approach aimed at broadening access to gaming experiences.

Additionally, during the employee briefing, Sharma also discussed Project Helix, the upcoming generation of Xbox hardware, which is expected to be a “family of devices.” This initiative hints at potential partnerships with various manufacturers, building on a strategic relationship between Microsoft and AMD, aimed at developing a comprehensive portfolio of cutting-edge gaming devices.

As Microsoft showcases its plans, the gaming community eagerly anticipates the implications of its new streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto VI and the future directions of Xbox Cloud Gaming.
