OpenAI adds two new members to its board of directors

OpenAI has announced the appointment of two seasoned financial executives, David Vélez and Robin Vince, to its boards of directors. These appointments come at a pivotal moment as the organization prepares for a potential initial public offering (IPO). Vélez, currently the CEO of Nubank, the largest digital bank in Latin America, brings extensive experience in digital financial services. Vince serves as the CEO of BNY, a leading financial services company, and both are expected to offer critical insights into how technology can transform various industries and stimulate economic growth.

The strategic move to add Vélez and Vince to its nonprofit and for-profit boards signals OpenAI’s readiness to navigate the complexities associated with going public. The company, which boasted a valuation exceeding 0 billion, had filed a confidential prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June, although an official timeline for its IPO has yet to be announced.

This recruitment follows a significant recapitalization that OpenAI executed in October, which restructured its operations by solidifying its status as a nonprofit foundation—the OpenAI Foundation—while maintaining a controlling interest in its for-profit entity, the OpenAI Group PBC. The nonprofit’s equity was reportedly valued at around 0 billion at that time, solidifying its standing as one of the most well-resourced nonprofit organizations globally.

Bret Taylor, chair of both the OpenAI Foundation and OpenAI Group PBC, emphasized the significance of these appointments, stating that both Vélez and Vince are exemplary leaders in using technology to create expansive opportunities in the financial sector. Taylor noted their expertise would be vital for OpenAI’s mission, which aims to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits a global audience across diverse business sectors.

Vélez and Vince join an established board comprising other industry veterans, including Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo and retired U.S. Army General Paul Nakasone. OpenAI has indicated that plans are in place for further board transitions as it looks toward its future.

The path to OpenAI’s IPO marks a new chapter for the organization, positioning it at the forefront of the technology industry as it continues to innovate and expand its reach.
