On a recent evening at the Outside Lands festival, actor and musician Joe Keery, widely known as Djo, took to the stage to electrify a sizable crowd that was eagerly anticipating his performance. His membership in the band Post Animal began in 2014, prior to his rise to fame through “Stranger Things.” This background sets the stage for his current endeavor as a solo artist, but the challenge of separating Djo from the charismatic Steve Harrington, his on-screen persona, continues to linger. Despite his earnest attempts to delineate his musical identity through stylistic choices, the association remains inescapable.

Leading up to his set, anticipation mounted as audiences familiarized themselves with Djo’s discography. His popular single “End of Beginning” has amassed nearly 3 billion streams on Spotify, hinting at a significant following despite the skepticism often addressed toward actors transitioning to music careers. When Djo finally appeared on stage, he donned a striking red hoodie under a workwear vest, presenting a visual nod to his beloved character as he opened with “Awake.”

Throughout his performance, Keery showcased a blend of synth-pop and rock influences that resonated with portions of the audience.
