Apple Confirms iPhone 18 Release Schedule and Key Features
Since 2019, Apple has strategically expanded its iPhone portfolio to include a more budget-friendly standard model alongside high-end “Pro” variants. This year, however, the tech giant is deviating from its traditional launch schedule, opting to split the release of the upcoming iPhone 18 into two distinct phases: one set for fall 2026 and the other for spring 2027.
During Apple’s anticipated event in September 2026, three premium models—the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a potential foldable variant, which may be labeled as the iPhone Ultra—will be unveiled. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to resemble its predecessor, the iPhone 17 Pro, but will incorporate a smaller Dynamic Island and a variable aperture Wide camera to enhance lighting adjustments. It is slated to be powered by the next-generation A20 chip, utilizing advanced 2nm process technology.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is likely to feature a design similar to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, albeit with a thicker body to accommodate a larger battery. While speculation exists regarding exclusive camera enhancements for this model, no official confirmations have been made. Both of these premium models are set to debut in a new dark cherry color, catering to evolving consumer aesthetics.
The introduction of a foldable iPhone represents a significant innovation for Apple. The device is expected to measure approximately 5.5 inches when closed and expand to about 7.8 inches when opened, akin to an iPad mini in landscape mode. This model is anticipated to incorporate multitasking features, utilize Touch ID, and operate with a two-camera system.
Market analysts predict that the iPhone 18 Pro models will carry a price increase ranging from 0 to 0 compared to their predecessors due to soaring memory component costs exacerbated by supply chain shortages. While Apple has managed to negotiate discounts on certain parts, particularly the display, analysts suggest that the price hike is largely unavoidable following recent increases on other product lines.
For spring 2027, Apple intends to release the standard iPhone 18, which will boast the same A20 chip along with enhanced RAM and a new modem chip. Additionally, an iPhone 18e model is set to follow, alongside a potential second-generation iPhone Air, which may feature upgraded components and enhanced camera capabilities.
As Apple navigates its dual-release strategy, it remains uncertain whether this shift will become a permanent fixture in its product rollout approach. Industry whispers hint at a special 20th-anniversary iPhone expected in fall 2027, though whether Apple will revert to its traditional launch patterns or maintain this new schedule remains to be seen.
