T-Mobile Introduces Monthly Fee for iOS 27 iPhone Handoff Feature

T-Mobile has announced a new service that will charge customers per month for the use of iPhone Handoff, a feature that enables users to share the same phone number across two separate iPhones. This innovative e-SIM functionality aims to enhance the user experience for those who frequently switch between devices.

Currently, iPhone Handoff is available only to T-Mobile users within the United States and Deutsche Telekom customers in Germany at its initial launch phase. This feature allows users to seamlessly manage calls, texts, data, mobile hotspot services, Scam Shield, and T-Satellite capabilities across two compatible iPhones. Customers can designate their primary device, with the ability to switch between the main and secondary devices as needed.

The introduction of iPhone Handoff aligns with Apple’s broader rollout of its iOS 27 update, which is designed to streamline the activation process and enhance device connectivity. To utilize the feature, customers must own two iPhones that are running iOS 27 or later and are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Furthermore, users must be logged into the same Apple account, with services such as FaceTime, iMessage, and Messages in iCloud activated.

Once set up, iPhone Handoff operates automatically, allowing users to unlock either device to switch between them effortlessly. It’s important to note that although features can be shared, a phone number can only be active on one iPhone at a time utilizing this service. Payment options via the Wallet app, including payment cards, can function across both devices; however, certain items like transit passes or corporate IDs may be limited to a single device.

This feature also supports Dual SIM configurations, assuming both eSIMs are sourced from carriers that provide iPhone Handoff. Upon unlocking an iPhone, both eSIMs synchronize to ensure a seamless transition.

Once the initial setup is completed, iPhone Handoff remains active until the customer contacts their carrier for a deactivation. T-Mobile’s introduction of this service may represent an intriguing shift in how users manage their multiple devices, particularly in an increasingly mobile world. iOS 27 is scheduled for release on September 14, while the new iPhone 18 Pro models will become available on September 18.
