Mayor Mamdani offers 70,000 free Met Opera tickets to New York City residents
In a move aimed at democratizing access to the arts, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced an initiative titled “Opera for All.” This program will provide 70,000 free tickets to the Metropolitan Opera over the course of the 2026-27 season, commencing this month. The announcement, made on Thursday, underscores a long-term partnership between the city and the renowned institution.
As part of this initiative, the Metropolitan Opera will allocate 10,000 tickets for free distribution each month, which amounts to approximately 10% of the season’s total ticket offerings. Eligible New Yorkers can enter a lottery to win tickets online or via the Met’s official app. The program is specifically designed for residents who have not purchased tickets for the Met Opera since 2019, ensuring that those who might not typically engage with such cultural offerings have the opportunity to experience them firsthand.
Mayor Mamdani emphasized the cultural importance of opera during the announcement. He articulated a belief that art should be accessible to all, regardless of financial status. “Opera is one of the greatest art forms we have, and there is no better place to experience it than the Metropolitan Opera House,” he stated, reinforcing the idea that the performing arts should be shared among all citizens of the city.
Peter Gelb, the general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the institution’s historical role in enriching New York City’s cultural landscape. He expressed optimism that “Opera for All” would further integrate the Met into the everyday life of New Yorkers.
The forthcoming season boasts a diverse lineup of performances, including well-known works such as “Macbeth,” “Lincoln in the Bardo,” and “La Bohème.” Tickets will span all sections of the Lincoln Square opera house, although standing-room tickets will not be included in the lottery program. The Met has affirmed its commitment to continue this initiative beyond the current season, reflecting an ongoing dedication to community engagement.
This is not an isolated effort by Mayor Mamdani to enhance access to the arts; his administration has previously established similar lotteries for Broadway and off-Broadway productions tailored specifically for high school students. Additional lotteries for discounted tickets to major events such as the FIFA World Cup and the U.S. Open have also been implemented, demonstrating a broader strategy to make cultural experiences more accessible to a wider audience.
