Boat disaster near Djibouti claims at least 139 lives, death toll expected to rise

A tragic maritime disaster has claimed the lives of at least 139 individuals, including children, after a boat carrying over 300 migrants capsized off the coast of Djibouti in East Africa. The incident was reported by a media source, which cited the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Sunday. This harrowing event highlights the perilous conditions faced by migrants seeking safety and economic opportunities through dangerous routes.

The reported death toll reflects only those individuals who have been officially buried by authorities in Djibouti. Many other victims were reportedly interred by fellow migrants, and these bodies will not be factored into the official count until they can be verified. Alexandre Coissac, the Chief of Mission for the IOM in Djibouti, highlighted the tragedy of the situation, noting that many of the deceased were buried namelessly in common graves, raising concerns about the erasure of individual identities amid the horror of such events.

According to Coissac, the vessel departed the evening of October 8 and sunk shortly thereafter, primarily due to overcapacity. With more than 305 people aboard, the incident represents one of the deadliest maritime accidents in recent history, further exacerbated by local authorities being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of bodies arriving ashore.

The IOM has since begun offering medical assistance and psychological support to about 80 survivors of the mishap, who are currently housed at the organization’s rescue center in Obock. Many survivors are reported to be in shock, grappling with the reality that some of their family members may have perished in the disaster. Communication was facilitated for some survivors, enabling them to inform family members back home of their survival, amid concerns for those still unaccounted.

This tragedy is part of a broader pattern of risk-taking among migrants from the Horn of Africa who embark on the hazardous journey across the Bab el-Mandeb Strait toward Gulf nations, seeking better livelihoods. Despite ongoing conflicts in Yemen, faced with escalating violence and instability, the movement of migrants persists unabated. The IOM’s reports indicate that over 900 migrants went missing or died along this route last year.

Coissac reflected on the gravity of the situation, describing the loss of life as devastating. He emphasized that this serves as a somber reminder of the dangers those in search of better opportunities are willing to confront.

In light of this tragedy, calls have intensified for governments and international donors to establish safer and legal means for migration, as the current circumstances force desperate individuals into life-threatening situations.
