Concerns Grow Over Possible Serial Killer in South Africa After Discovery of Tenth Woman’s Body

Authorities in South Africa have confirmed the grim discovery of a tenth body near Johannesburg, raising the total number of victims in a series of suspected killings to ten. This alarming trend has drawn significant concern from both the police and the public, particularly regarding the safety of women in the area.

The investigation commenced following the discovery of three bodies in July and August 2023, located within a close proximity of approximately 4.3 miles in the Ekurhuleni municipality, which is situated east of Johannesburg. In a shocking turn of events, six additional bodies were located over a span of ten days earlier this month, prompting fears that a serial killer or multiple assailants may be involved.

In connection with the ninth body, which was unearthed on September 17, police have arrested two women and charged them with murder. This particular victim was reportedly subjected to brutal violence, having been stabbed and having her throat cut. However, investigators have not linked the charged individuals to the earlier murders, leading to speculation that the ninth killing may be an isolated incident. Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, acknowledged that while some similarities exist among the cases, definitive connections between the murders have yet to be established.

In response to the escalating crisis, the authorities have issued warnings urging women in the vicinity to exercise heightened caution. They have engaged the Investigative Psychology Unit, which focuses on complex or serial violent crimes, to aid in the investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that many of the victims were women in their 20s or 30s, with some found naked or partially clothed in exposed areas near main arteries of transportation.

The overarching context of these heinous acts is South Africa’s troubling rates of violent crime, particularly against women. A recent study highlighted that, on average, three women were killed daily by an intimate partner from 2020 to 2021. The country’s murder rate remains one of the highest globally, averaging over 60 deaths per day. The string of killings in Ekurhuleni has reignited widespread public outcry regarding women’s safety and the urgent need for effective protective measures.
