E coli blueberry recall extends to frozen mixed berry products sold at Walmart in 16 states
A recent food safety issue has surfaced as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an expansion of a blueberry recall, which originally began in July over concerns of E. coli contamination. This latest recall now also encompasses frozen packages of strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries labeled as Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend, which are sold at Walmart stores across 16 states.
The recall has been issued by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., a Chilean supplier, affecting 10-ounce packets of the Organic Triple Berry Blend. This product is available in multiple states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, and Texas, among others. The potential risks associated with the consumption of these berries have raised alarms among consumers and health officials alike.
Initially, the supplier recalled packages of 10-ounce GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries after reports emerged indicating that consumers became ill after consuming the product. Although there have been no new reports of illness related directly to the berry mix from this extension of the recall, nagging concerns linger, as prior infections implicated E. coli O145—a strain known to cause severe gastrointestinal illness.
Notably, reports indicate that at least 17 individuals in Florida and Georgia experienced illness linked to the original blueberry recall, resulting in six hospitalizations. Consumers are advised to check the Universal Product Code (UPC) of the mixed berry package, which reads 7874211226, and to note the product’s “best by” date, which is set for February 9, 2028.
E. coli can produce a range of symptoms that may include severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and nausea, highlighting the importance of food safety measures. Although most healthy individuals recover from these infections within about a week, complications can arise, particularly among vulnerable populations, such as young children and the elderly.
In light of these developments, consumers who have purchased this frozen berry mix are urged to discard it or return it to a Walmart store for a refund. As food safety continues to be a critical public health concern, vigilance from both consumers and suppliers remains essential.
