East Africa Urgently Prepares for AFCON 2027 Tournament

With less than nine months until the commencement of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, the joint preparations by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are entering a critical phase. Scheduled from June 19 to July 17, 2027, this tournament marks a historic occasion as the first Africa Cup of Nations to be co-hosted by three nations and the first return to East Africa since Ethiopia hosted the finals in 1976.

A recent assessment by a delegation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) involved an eight-day inspection across the three host countries. The evaluation included crucial infrastructure such as stadiums, training facilities, hotels, and transportation networks. The delegation comprised officials dedicated to various aspects of tournament organization, including safety, security, logistics, and media relations.

In Kenya, the Talanta Sports International Stadium in Nairobi is positioned as the flagship venue for the tournament, with a seating capacity of 60,000. During a recent visit, CAF leadership expressed satisfaction with the progress at Talanta, although the inspection also highlighted the need for further development at the Kasarani Stadium. Beyond the flagship stadium, preparation efforts in Kenya encompass an array of training venues and essential amenities, with local officials confirming that they are actively addressing any outstanding requirements.

Concerns have been raised by sports enthusiasts regarding the readiness of training facilities, with some venues still a work in progress. The need for adequate training grounds and supporting infrastructure will be pivotal as teams prepare to converge for the tournament.

Tanzania is similarly advancing in its preparations, with stadiums reported to be more than 80 percent complete. The Local Organising Committee has stated that training facilities in each host location are being developed in alignment with the national sports regulatory standards. The urgency to complete these infrastructure elements has been underscored by directives from government officials focused on expediting work to ensure timely readiness.

Uganda’s preparations are following suit, with local authorities aiming for all critical infrastructure to be operational by the end of December. Several stadiums, including Hoima City Stadium and Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium, are nearing completion, with plans to finalize training facilities shortly thereafter.

As the host nations transition from the construction phase to operational readiness, the ensuing months will be critical in determining their capacity to deliver a successful tournament. All three countries are drawing on experience gained from co-hosting the upcoming African Nations Championship in 2024, thereby bolstering confidence in their collaborative efforts.

Ultimately, the tournament is poised not only to showcase footballing talent but also to provide a platform for showcasing East Africa’s hospitality and organizational capabilities, presenting an opportunity for the region to engage in a vibrant celebration of African football.
