McDonald’s to reintroduce fried apple pie in celebration of America’s 250th birthday
In a move to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, McDonald’s has announced the return of its beloved fried apple pie. The iconic dessert will be available at participating U.S. locations starting June 23, marking its first widespread U.S. launch in over three decades.
According to a media source, McDonald’s regards this dessert as a “fan-favorite” and a “national treasure,” emphasizing its nostalgic value as summer approaches, encouraging patrons to take a moment to enjoy the treat. The freshly fried apple pies feature a filling made from 100% American-grown apples, encased in a golden, flaky crust that many consumers fondly remember.
The origins of the fried apple pie date back to the 1960s, when entrepreneur Litton Cochran introduced the concept as a hand pie in East Tennessee. This dessert quickly gained popularity, becoming a staple within McDonald’s offerings. While the fried version was replaced by a baked alternative in most regions around 1992, primarily due to rising health consciousness about fat and cholesterol, it has retained a loyal following, especially in Hawaii and several international markets, including the United Kingdom and Australia.
The announcement of the dessert’s return coincides with a broader strategy by McDonald’s to engage with its customer base through nostalgic marketing. Eric Cochran, a current owner/operator and grandson of the dessert’s original creator, reflected on the emotional connection that this pie holds for many consumers. He mentioned the cultural significance of the dessert, recalling how it was a suggestion made by his grandfather when Ray Kroc, the founder of modern McDonald’s, sought a new dessert option.
In addition to the product launch, McDonald’s plans to further commemorate this occasion with a giant 35-foot fried apple pie installation along Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois, close to the company’s headquarters in Chicago. This installation will remain on display until July 4, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations. Plans for a kickoff event, complete with live music and complimentary treats, are also in development to draw in the crowds and enhance community engagement.
This strategic initiative not only aims to rekindle fond memories for longtime customers but also seeks to attract new patrons during a summer filled with celebrations. By combining nostalgia with a festive atmosphere, McDonald’s hopes to make a significant impression during this historic anniversary.
