Microsoft Introduces ,599 Surface Laptop Ultra to Compete with MacBook Pro

Microsoft has officially announced the launch details and pricing for its latest innovation, the Surface Laptop Ultra, a device aimed primarily at creators and developers. Set to launch on October 16, the Surface Laptop Ultra will start at ,599, which strategically undercuts Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro priced at ,999.

This new 15-inch laptop is designed to cater to demanding tasks including software development, AI, engineering, and 3D workloads. Powering the Surface Laptop Ultra is the Nvidia RTX Spark chip, which features an Nvidia Blackwell RTX GPU capable of harnessing up to 6,144 cores, alongside the Nvidia Grace CPU that supports up to 20 cores. Microsoft emphasizes the device’s capacity to accommodate up to 128GB of unified memory, complemented by an advanced thermal architecture tailored to manage the robust hardware effectively.

According to Microsoft, the Surface Laptop Ultra boasts the highest performance levels of any notebook the company has produced to date. The display is described as ‘the brightest, sharpest, and most vivid’ that has ever been utilized in a Surface product, with peak HDR brightness 25% greater than that of the M5 MacBook Pro. The device’s mini-LED display is equipped with touchscreen capabilities, supporting a variety of gestures and navigational commands, although it does not accommodate pen input.

In terms of design, the Surface Laptop Ultra is notably lighter than its Apple counterpart and includes features such as a large haptic trackpad and upgradeable storage. A distinctive aspect of this new device is its support for Magnetic Connect, touted as the world’s first built-in magnetic USB-C charging solution on a laptop. The laptop comes equipped with a comprehensive array of ports including three USB-C sockets, a USB-A port, an HDMI port, an SD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Accompanying the Surface Laptop Ultra’s announcement was the introduction of the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, priced at ,999, which is aimed at competing with devices like Apple’s Mac Studio and Mac mini. This model, utilizing the same Nvidia RTX Spark chip, offers an extraordinary AI performance of up to 1 petaflop, facilitating support for AI models as large as 120 billion parameters.

To entice potential customers, Microsoft is offering an attractive promotion for existing MacBook owners. Those interested in transitioning to the Surface Laptop Ultra can receive up to ,000 cashback when they trade in an eligible MacBook.

As the Surface Laptop Ultra enters the market, it will face competition from a rumored OLED MacBook, which is expected to feature advanced specifications such as M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, along with a thinner, lighter design.
