In a recently reported decline, Nintendo has experienced a significant drop in sales of its flagship gaming console, the Switch 2. During the company’s fiscal second quarter, which ended on September 30, 2025, Nintendo sold 2.67 million units of the device, reflecting a 41% decrease compared to the same period a year ago. This figure also marks a reduction from the previous quarter, where 3.82 million units were sold.
The downturn in sales can be attributed to price increases implemented by Nintendo, a move that comes against the backdrop of escalating memory costs due to supply shortages and heightened demand for chips, a fundamental component of the consoles. The company had already raised prices for the Switch 2 earlier in the year within Japan, before extending these increases to markets in the United States and Canada.
Despite this concerning trend, Nintendo has reaffirmed its sales forecast for the Switch 2, maintaining an expectation to sell 16.5 million units throughout the current fiscal year, which concludes in March 2027. However, the company fell short of analyst predictions during this reporting period: revenue was reported at 448.2 billion Japanese yen (approximately .8 billion), compared to the estimated 481.37 billion yen. Additionally, net profit of 73.5 billion yen also fell below expectations of 82.16 billion yen.
Looking ahead, industry observers express a keen interest in upcoming game releases as a potential catalyst for improving Switch 2 sales. Among these is “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time,” a remake of one of Nintendo’s most beloved titles, which was launched on a recent Thursday. While some popular titles, such as “Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream” and “Pokémon Pokopia,” have garnered attention this year, the lack of major blockbuster releases raises concerns regarding consumer interest, especially given the increased pricing of the console.
Analysts suggest that it will be crucial for Nintendo to bolster its lineup with more widely anticipated titles in the forthcoming fiscal year to ensure continued momentum for the Switch 2. Attention is also directed toward new Pokémon games anticipated for release in 2027, which could further impact sales in the coming years.
