Lei Chen, a doctoral student at the University of Arkansas, has received two significant honors at the IFT FIRST 2026 event in Chicago, Illinois. He was recognized as an Invited Student Research Presenter and awarded the 2026 IFT Section Outstanding Volunteer Award.
Recognition for Research and Volunteer Work at IFT FIRST 2026
Chen was one of only 60 students selected to present his research at the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) annual event, a distinction awarded based on the scientific merit of his work. This year, IFT changed its selection process, eliminating traditional division-level competitions and instead choosing students from various divisions to showcase their contributions to food science. Chen was one of only two students chosen from the Sensory and Consumer Sciences Division.
His research focuses on enhancing sensory evaluation and dining experiences for individuals with vision impairment, aiming to create more inclusive methods and expand opportunities for participation in sensory and consumer research. In addition to his research, Chen serves as the online community co-lead for IFT’s Sensory and Consumer Sciences Division, facilitating communication and engagement among professionals in the field.
Support from Academic Advisors
Han-Seok Seo, Chen’s adviser and a professor in the Department of Food Science, praised Chen’s achievements, stating, “Lei is a distinguished student who has demonstrated outstanding research capabilities, leadership and volunteerism.” Seo highlighted Chen’s growth as a researcher and his contributions to the professional community.
Chen holds a bachelor’s degree in food science and engineering from Nanjing Agricultural University in China and a master’s degree in food technology with a specialization in sensory science from Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands.
These recognitions underscore Chen’s dedication to advancing inclusive food science research and his commitment to leadership within the professional community.
