Oil Prices Rise Over 1% Following Trump’s Rejection of Iranian Hormuz Strait Reopening Proposal

Crude oil prices experienced a decline from earlier session highs on Monday, as Saudi Arabia reportedly undertook significant repairs to its East-West pipeline, leading to enhanced oil flow. Brent crude futures, which serve as the international benchmark, increased by 96 cents to settle at 5.28 per barrel, despite peaking at 8.83 earlier in the session. Meanwhile, U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures rose by 19 cents, closing at .60 after reaching .54 at one point.

Recent reports indicated that Saudi Arabia has restored the flow of oil through the pivotal East-West pipeline to approximately 3.5 million barrels per day. This pipeline, which has a maximum capacity of 7 million barrels per day, had been temporarily shut down earlier this month due to damage inflicted by a drone strike launched from Iraq. In addition, export activities have resumed at the Red Sea port of Yanbu, signaling a gradual return to normalcy in Saudi oil exports.

In parallel to these developments, diplomatic tensions concerning Iran and U.S. sanctions became a focal point. A White House official conveyed that President Donald Trump is open to the possibility of sanction relief for Iran and unfreezing its assets, contingent upon tangible progress towards a nuclear agreement. Despite this seemingly conciliatory posture, reports have emerged indicating that Trump is skeptical of Tehran’s overtures for negotiation, having rejected one recent proposal outright.

The ongoing discourse surrounding U.S.-Iran relations is particularly critical, as tensions have escalated following U.S. and Israeli military action against Iran. Should hostilities resume post-midterm elections, energy market participants are bracing for potential volatility. Cornelia Meyer, CEO of Meyer Resources, noted that the market is factoring in the “clear and present danger” of a return to conflict, which could disrupt oil supply chains at a time when many countries rely heavily on their existing inventories.

Despite the optimism surrounding pipeline repairs, the geopolitical landscape remains precarious. The balance between energy supply stability and international diplomacy will be closely monitored as the situation continues to evolve, impacting both global oil prices and regional stability.
