Popular cookie chain shuts down all locations following swift growth expansion

Chip City, a cookie chain founded in New York, has officially announced the closure of all its locations across the country, marking a significant turn of events for the once-promising brand. The company, which originated in 2017 from the vision of childhood friends Peter Phillips and Teddy Gailas, started as a single storefront in Astoria, Queens, and rapidly expanded to several states, including New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, and Virginia.

In a statement released on Friday, Chip City cited “significant macroeconomic headwinds” as a primary factor behind the decision to shut down its operations. The announcement expressed gratitude to its loyal customer base and dedicated employees who had supported the establishment for the past decade.

Chip City gained fame for its oversized cookies and innovative flavor offerings, with more than 180 varieties showcased on its rotating menu. The brand’s aggressive growth trajectory attracted the attention of Enlightened Hospitality Investments (EHI), an investment fund associated with notable restaurateur Danny Meyer. In 2022, EHI injected million into Chip City to propel its expansion plans, helping the chain grow from 14 locations to a multi-state operation.

Up until recently, Chip City had remained optimistic about its future, promoting growth initiatives and announcing key leadership changes to bolster its revenue and operational performance. However, the closure coincides with ongoing legal challenges for Phillips, who has filed a lawsuit against the company and its executives. He alleges that he was denied compensation and benefits owed to him after stepping down from his role as CEO earlier this year.

The abrupt exit from the market not only highlights a significant setback for Chip City but also underscores the challenging environment many retailers face amid shifting economic conditions. The closure spurs concern within the food service sector, where numerous businesses have grappled with rising costs and changing consumer preferences in recent years.

As Chip City recedes from the cookie market, industry observers will undoubtedly watch its competitors and the broader dessert industry for signals of changing consumer appetites and potential opportunities in an evolving landscape.
