Robyn to headline San Francisco’s Portola Festival
As the music landscape transitions into the fall season, anticipation is brewing for one of the year’s most electrifying events—the Portola Music Festival. Set to take place on September 26 and 27, the festival will showcase a plethora of electronic music subgenres at Pier 80, a venue known for its industrial aesthetic that resonates with the raw variety of sounds expected at the event. Coinciding with the renowned Folsom Street Fair, this marks the fifth edition of Portola, a festival that has quickly established itself as a premier destination for electronic music fans.
This year’s lineup features a host of prominent artists, most notably Swedish dance-pop sensation Robyn, who is set to headline Saturday. Renowned for chart-topping tracks like “Call Your Girlfriend” and “Dancing On My Own,” Robyn’s recent work, including the acclaimed album “Sexistential,” further cements her status in the music scene. She will share the stage with the dynamic duo Dog Blood, consisting of Skrillex and Boys Noize, who are generating significant buzz following their recent collaboration with Nine Inch Nails. The festival’s Sunday lineup promises to enthrall attendees as Swedish House Mafia, known for their big room creations, take the lead.
The diversity of the lineup extends beyond the headliners to include a mix of established names and emerging talent. Soulwax, a fixture in the electronic music community, will return to present their celebrated Despacio dance club experience. Other noteworthy acts include Four Tet, along with up-and-coming artists like electro-pop group Bassvictim and local sensation underscores. The festival also pays homage to the past with a robust selection of legacy acts such as Tiesto, Tricky, Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada, and DJ Shadow—celebrating 30 years of DJ Shadow’s seminal work “Endtroducing…”
While hip-hop representation appears limited, British rapper Skepta is expected to attract significant crowds. The lineup will also feature various local talents, including Eriika alongside SF Cowboy, Clearcast from Vitamin 1000, and Felly Fell, with unique performances that reflect the rich musical tapestry of the Bay Area.
Organized by the Bay Area chapters of Goldenvoice, who are also responsible for the renowned Coachella Festival, Portola aims to further entrench electronic music in San Francisco’s cultural fabric. This is exemplified by their recent Club Darc series at Pier 48, featuring major acts like Solomun and Underworld.
For those interested in attending, presale tickets for previous Portola attendees became available on June 1, while general admission tickets went on sale the next day. With a diverse range of performances scheduled, Portola promises a memorable weekend for electronic music aficionados.
