SNL UK Launches Second Series Featuring Harry and Meghan Sketch

“Saturday Night Live UK” made its return to audiences with a thought-provoking and entertaining opening sketch that satirized the Duke and Duchess of Sussex amid their recent relocation back to the United Kingdom. The broadcast, aired on September 12, was highlighted by a cold open featuring actors Jack Shep and Ayoade Bamgboye, who embodied Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for the first time in this series.

The sketch humorously depicted the couple visiting Balmoral Castle, where they interacted with King Charles and Queen Camilla, portrayed by Larry Dean and Emma Sidi. This light-hearted portrayal follows Harry and Meghan’s return to the UK after spending six years in America, marking a notable moment in royal public life.

In the opening scene, the couple’s excitement was palpable, with Harry exclaiming humorously, “Daddy, I’m home!” However, the comedic undertones took a cheeky turn as Charles reminded them that the castle was reserved for “royals only,” while Camilla playfully welcomed Meghan by remarking on her complexion. The sketch continued to showcase the couple’s non-traditional royal status through a comical exchange about Meghan’s lifestyle brand, specifically her Netflix series, “With Love, Meghan.” The scene escalated when Meghan presented Camilla with a block of ice as a gift, prompting Harry’s remark that they rely on top-notch chefs to manage their culinary needs.

Further advancing the commentary on their financial affairs, Charles teasingly mentioned their Netflix earnings, leading to Harry’s humorous response. The introduction of a character, played by George Fouracres as the new Prime Minister Andy Burnham, added layers to the satire, as Burnham playfully asserted that he was nothing like his predecessors.

The sketch concluded on a future-facing note, with Harry and Meghan expressing their aspirations to embody more traditional roles, alongside Burnham’s comedic yet inspirational closing remarks. The show wrapped up with a musical performance by host Jeff Goldblum and guest artist CMAT, keeping the artistic spirit alive as the series resumes with all 11 original cast members.

As the series progresses, it remains to be seen how it will continue to tackle relevant political and cultural issues with its signature blend of humor and critique.
