The incident occurred on Sunday night along one of the main highways in the Western Cape Province, specifically between the towns of Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, situated approximately 380 kilometers (235 miles) east of Cape Town, as reported by a media source.
According to authorities, the collision involved two Toyota minibus taxis and a Suzuki sport utility vehicle. Initial reports indicate that eight people were declared dead at the scene, with the death toll rising to 21 as three additional victims succumbed to their injuries after being transported to local hospitals. Four others sustained serious injuries in the crash. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), South Africa’s national traffic agency, indicated that the death toll could change as emergency services continue their assessments of the site.
In the wake of this devastating event, police have opened a culpable homicide investigation, and the cause of the collision remains under thorough investigation by the RTMC. The N1 highway, the location of the crash, has been closed to facilitate these investigations.
This incident is part of a larger pattern of road tragedies in South Africa. The weekend’s crashes resulted in a total of at least 29 fatalities nationwide, with an additional eight people killed in a separate accident near Ermelo in Mpumalanga province. Minibus taxis serve as a critical mode of public transportation for millions of South Africans, yet they are frequently involved in fatal accidents. Earlier this year, two separate incidents involving minibus taxis resulted in a combined death toll of at least 25 people, including 14 children.
