Trump envoy criticizes South Africa for hateful chant, warns the country is aligning with adversaries of the United States

The ongoing tension between the United States and South Africa has reached a new pinnacle as the U.S. ambassador to South Africa, L. Brent Bozell III, publicly criticized President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration for failing to address what he deems hate speech and incitement to violence against minority communities. This escalation follows the ambassador’s summoning by South Africa’s foreign ministry after his remarks about governmental inaction against anti-farmer rhetoric, notably the controversial chant “Kill the Boer! Kill the farmer!”

Ambassador Bozell’s critique arrives at a time when diplomatic relations between the U.S. and South Africa seem to be strained. In the nine months since taking office, he has faced diplomatic rebukes from Pretoria, a situation he attributes to the South African government’s disregard for U.S. concerns highlighted during President Donald Trump’s administration. Bozell underscored that President Trump demanded action against violent rhetoric that targets farmers, many of whom are of Afrikaans descent, yet the South African government has largely dismissed these calls.

The ambassador articulated that international observers universally recognize such chants as incitement to violence, describing them as hate speech. In particular, he mentioned the ineffectiveness of the government in addressing these issues, despite a Supreme Court ruling that ostensibly permits the chanting. Moreover, Ambassador Bozell pointed out that three out of five demands from the Trump administration concerning racial equality and protection of minority rights have been ignored by the South African leadership.

The U.S. administration aims to forge cooperative mining ventures for critical and rare earth minerals, emphasizing a mutually beneficial economic relationship. Despite geopolitical shifts that have seen South Africa gravitating towards nations like Russia and China, Bozell remains optimistic about the potential for partnership between the countries. He argued that establishing a partnership is crucial, not just for economic reasons but also for fostering peace and addressing the historical grievances in South Africa.

As the future of U.S.-South Africa relations hangs in the balance, both sides appear to face challenges in navigating their differences. While South Africa reaffirms its commitment to maintaining a strategic partnership with the U.S., the ambassador’s harsh words hint at a pressing urgency for a resolution to enhance cooperation between the two nations.
