United Airlines flight to Spain returns to U.S. due to Bluetooth device causing safety concern
A United Airlines flight traveling from Newark Liberty International Airport to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, was forced to return to New Jersey shortly after takeoff due to a potential security breach. The flight, which departed at approximately 6 p.m. on Saturday, returned to Newark at 9:37 p.m. local time with 190 passengers and 12 crew members on board.
The incident unfolded when air traffic control received a report regarding the naming of a Bluetooth device observed on the aircraft. According to communications recorded from air traffic control, a clear directive was issued for security personnel to inspect the aircraft thoroughly, including the cargo area. This reported concern was tied to a Bluetooth device named with an offensive term, which raised alarms among the flight crew and air traffic controllers.
In the wake of the incident, crew members reportedly requested that all passengers deactivate their Bluetooth devices. However, at least two digital devices remained operational, prompting officials to take further action. The decision to return to Newark was made after consultation with the airline’s corporate office located in Chicago.
Upon landing, passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft as Port Authority police initiated a sweep of the plane. This process involved re-screening the passengers by TSA and Customs and Border Protection before they were allowed to re-board. United Airlines has declined to provide further details regarding the specific cause of the disturbance.
Following the incident, passengers were accommodated on a replacement flight that took off early Sunday morning, successfully landing in Palma de Mallorca later that afternoon. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the flight returned to Newark due to a “passenger disturbance,” part of a larger trend, as over 640 similar incidents involving unruly passengers have been documented in 2026 alone.
This is not the first security-related issue for United Airlines this month; a domestic flight was diverted earlier due to a security concern surrounding an unruly passenger. Furthermore, there was a separate incident earlier in the month in which a United flight struck a semitrailer truck and a light pole while landing in Newark, although fortunately, no injuries were reported. This series of events underscores the ongoing challenges airlines face regarding in-flight security and passenger behavior.
