Warner Bros. Faces Delays in ‘Barbie’ Sequel Negotiations with Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, and Ryan Gosling
The anticipated sequel to the blockbuster film “Barbie” is currently facing significant hurdles in negotiations between Warner Bros. and key members of the original production team. As the deadline approaches in December, the studio must finalize agreements with notable stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as well as director and co-writer Greta Gerwig. Failure to reach a consensus could result in the rights for the film reverting back to Mattel, according to information from a media source.
Warner Bros. has been engaged in discussions with the primary cast for several months, reportedly proposing a profit-sharing arrangement contingent upon the new film achieving specific box office performance targets. However, a report indicates that David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, rejected the latest deal, deeming it excessively generous.
A representative from Warner Bros. has contested this narrative by asserting that the talent’s representatives turned down an initial offer made in May and have yet to counter with an alternative proposal. In a statement, co-chairs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca underscored their commitment to securing the next “Barbie” installment, stating, “We have a rights deal with Mattel in place and have made a series of big offers to try and finalize deals to make the next Barbie film. Unfortunately, we have been unable to reach an agreement thus far.”
Despite these setbacks, Gerwig and her co-writer Noah Baumbach have been developing concepts for “Barbie 2” for a number of years. Reports suggest they have been in the early stages of constructing a narrative for the sequel.
The original “Barbie,” released in July 2023, was both a commercial triumph and a cultural sensation, grossing approximately .5 billion globally and earning eight Academy Award nominations, including one for the poignant song “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell. The film’s success was amplified by its vibrant marketing and strategic release alongside Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” a phenomenon that humorously dubbed the duo as “Barbenheimer.”
With negotiations still ongoing, the future of the “Barbie” sequel remains uncertain, leaving fans and industry observers alike eagerly awaiting further developments.
