Xbox considers canceling Blade game and closing Arkane studio
Microsoft’s gaming division is bracing for significant changes as the company prepares to enact layoffs affecting its Xbox studios, with reports suggesting potential closures of at least five studios. These layoffs are expected to commence next week, specifically on July 6, and could impact a large number of employees within the division. The anticipated job losses are reportedly in the range of 1,000, with up to 500 of those jobs tied directly to studio closures.
According to insights from a media source, the restructuring will result in studio closures or spinoffs, several studio mergers, and the cancellation of upcoming game projects. One notable studio on the chopping block is the team responsible for “Marvel’s Blade,” a title that has experienced delays and budgetary issues, pushing its release from late 2026 to a projected date in 2027. This shift underscores broader financial pressures the gaming division is facing.
Microsoft is also exploring the possibility of selling Arkane Studios, known for its work on the “Dishonored” series, alongside attempts to divest from other studios, including Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory. These moves reflect a strategic pivot under the leadership of the new CEO, Asha Sharma. Reports indicate that Compulsion Games has already started informing its employees to seek other employment opportunities, pointing to a sense of urgency within these studios.
Sharma has suggested that such significant layoffs are part of a necessary “reset” for the Xbox division, as she reiterates that current business conditions are untenable. She has also acknowledged that the organization must make “hard choices” to ultimately achieve its ambition of becoming the leading gaming and entertainment company, a goal she asserts goes beyond merely meeting profit margins.
The upcoming restructuring poses a stark challenge not only for Microsoft but also for the gaming industry as a whole, as companies seek innovative ways to maintain relevance and profitability in a rapidly evolving market. As the situation develops, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the decisions that emerge from Microsoft’s headquarters, given the broader implications for the entire gaming landscape.
