Xbox Series X Now Compatible with PlayStation 5 Games
In a noteworthy development for the gaming community, it has been reported that the Xbox Series X console is now capable of running select PlayStation 5 games, thanks to an innovative emulator created by the modding community. While more recent PS5 titles, such as “Marvel’s Wolverine,” remain incompatible with this new functionality, an impressive progress in PS5 emulation on PC is beginning to transition into the Xbox platform.
The foundation of this project lies in the KytyPS5, an open-source emulator for PlayStation 5 games designed for personal computers. Modder Devran Cosmo Uenal has adapted this emulator for the Xbox Series X, resulting in a version known as PS5X. Although PS5X does not yet match the performance levels of its PC counterpart, the results thus far are promising.
Currently, a limited selection of PS5 games has been demonstrated as operational on the Xbox Series X through PS5X. This library includes titles such as “Gex Trilogy,” “Hellboy: Web of Wyrd,” “Marvel Cosmic Invasion,” and “Quake 2.” Smaller games tend to be the first to achieve playable status with new emulators, and it is anticipated that broader compatibility will emerge as development progresses.
Despite the initial success, the user experience on PS5X is still marred by glitches and performance issues, evident in gameplay footage showcasing “Quake 2,” which exhibits fluctuating frame rates between 20 and 40 FPS. These challenges highlight the ongoing need for enhancements to enable popular PS5 exclusives, such as “Demon’s Souls” or “Ghost of Tsushima,” to operate seamlessly.
Nevertheless, advancements are being made swiftly. Uenal’s recent updates to the PS5X user interface reveal additional games under consideration for testing, including prominent titles like “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time” and “Gran Turismo 7.” The eventual public release of PS5X will allow users to install it on their Xbox Series X in developer mode, a process deemed safe and risk-free.
The underlying technical challenges stem from the differing architectures of the consoles. Unlike the KytyPS5 on PC, which utilizes Vulkan rendering, the Xbox Series X relies on DirectX, necessitating manual adjustments that complicate compatibility and affect performance.
As the landscape of gaming emulation evolves, the quest for perfect PlayStation 5 emulation on non-Sony hardware is gaining traction, with significant strides taken toward achieving full functionality on platforms such as Xbox.
