OpenAI launches new hardware designed specifically for Codex technology
OpenAI has recently announced the release of a new hardware device named Codex Micro, marking its first foray into hardware products. This initiative is distinct from an ongoing project with former Apple designer Jony Ive, which is believed to involve the development of a smart speaker powered by artificial intelligence. Codex Micro is specifically tailored for users of OpenAI’s coding platform, Codex.
The Codex Micro is a compact, square-shaped device equipped with a variety of buttons designed to enhance user interaction with Codex. Collaborating with keyboard manufacturer Work Louder, OpenAI has created this limited-run product to provide users with improved tools for monitoring and managing their coding agents.
Featuring an array of 13 mechanical switches, the Codex Micro closely resembles Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2 and showcases similar functionality. Marketing imagery indicates that the device also includes a joystick, dial, and touch sensor, aligning with a broader trend in modular input devices tailored for specific software applications.
Available for 0 through the Supply Co platform, the Codex Micro is being promoted as a valuable tool for software developers and coders looking to better manage their workflows. OpenAI has not disclosed the exact number of units produced in this collaboration, which suggests a potential scarcity that may drive demand among tech enthusiasts.
The device is designed with user-friendliness in mind. It features six frosted keys that provide real-time visual feedback on the status of Codex tasks, using a color-coded system to indicate various states such as completion, need for feedback, or errors. Additionally, users can configure command keys for common functions, alongside customizable keycap options representing Codex icons.
The joystick and dial functionalities enable users to initiate workflows and adjust Codex’s reasoning levels on-the-fly, all of which can be managed via the ChatGPT desktop application.
Interestingly, the Codex Micro’s introduction comes at a time when OpenAI’s other hardware initiative—reported to be a smart speaker designed for conversational interactions with ChatGPT—is facing legal scrutiny from Apple, which has accused OpenAI of intellectual property theft. OpenAI has responded to these allegations, asserting their lack of merit, while continuing to move forward with multiple product innovations.
